By the end of the course you will have acquired sufficient 'survival' language to get by on a visit to France. This course starts at Absolute Beginners level in October. Understanding Italy

A short course for people who may speak a little Italian. The level is not important as it will be taught mainly in English but use key Italian words and phrases to highlight some of the points discussed. It focuses on how culture, religion and multiple invasions have shaped modern Italy and the impact this has had on its business environment, politics and professional organisations. To help us understand Italy we will look at the national anthem, the Italian family, migration and immigration, regional differences, dialects and customs and the concept of bella figura (adapting to situations with style) Tutor: Sara Roman

AMERICA: From the Founding Fathers to the War of Independence

Centre: Friends Meeting House

This course will examine and explore the birth of America, starting with the Pilgrim Fathers and their arrival on the Mayflower in 1620 up until the declaration of Independence in 1776. It will provide a fascinating insight into the settlement and colonisation process as well as the establishment of the "peculiar institution" of slavery, based on the cotton plant, in the deep south. The struggles of the Native American Indians will also be examined along with the growing resistance and resentment to British rule as exemplified by the Boston Tea Party. Finally, the outbreak of 7 years of war and the declaration of Independence will be explored along with the legacy of the American Constitution. Tutor: Lorraine Schofield

American slavery and the American Civil War & Reconstruction

Centre: Friends Meeting House

The focus of this course will be on the "Peculiar Institution" of Slavery in the USA in the Nineteenth Century and will examine in detail how it operated and how the slaves adapted to and coped with their difficult circumstances. Slave culture, family life and marriage will be explored giving a real insight into the system of slavery, including how slaves raised their children, spent their leisure time and related to their slave masters. Original slave testimonies from famous slaves such as Sojourner Truth, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglas will be examined as well as slave rebellions and the operation of Underground Railroad system which enabled some slaves to escape. The impact of the Abolition Movement and the subsequent outbreak of the Civil War will be explored culminating in Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 to free the slaves. The course and progress of The Civil War will be examined followed by the period of Reconstruction after the war, charting how the USA adapted and recovered. There will be a particular focus on the lives of the ex slaves who although now technically free were far from equal in what was still to all intents and purposes a white supremacist American society. Contemporary Stitch

A creative course which is suited to both beginners and the more experienced at sewing. There is the opportunity to learn decorative stitching and beading techniques to create an individual piece of work based on a set theme. Calligraphy

A creative calligraphy course suited to both beginners and the more experienced calligraphers. You will be introduced to a variety of scripts and calligraphy techniques. Beginners will be introduced to the basics of Italic script in the first instance whilst the more experienced will be encouraged to produce pieces which use calligraphy to create innovative works of art. Progressing your Family History

DRAWING Absolute Beginners

Centre: The Triangle Annexe

This course starts at the beginning and looks at the type of pencils and papers we use and why. It progresses on to drawing simple objects and then grouping them into arrangements. We will then move onto drawing simple portraits. A variety of drawing techniques using pencil will be explored and ways of looking at the objects we are drawing. If you join in January or April you will need a little experience of basic drawing techniques. Tutor: Sandra Bouguerch

It will help develop your conversational skills around a variety of topics and at the same time build your confidence to speak Italian.
