Acrylic Painting

For those that have some experience of using Acrylics. This course will be based mainly on landscape painting. We will start by making studies of features in different types of landscape and gradually progress to working on a main piece. We will look at the impact of colour and different ways you can use acrylic paints to create a range of effects. This will include glazing, textures and impasto. Britain Between the Wars

This course covers the history of the 1920's and 1930's. It starts with the 'Roaring Twenties' and finishes at the declaration of the Second World War. It will cover the Great Depression and the General Strike, the growth of suburban life, entertainment and leisure as well as the abdication crisis and changing attitudes towards the 'Empire'. The Social legacy of the Second World War

Centre: The Friends Meeting House

We are familiar with the military history of the war but there was also another and longer lasting aspect to the war. As well as rationing, government initiatives like make do and mend on the home front the seeds were sewn for a social revolution in Britain. Perceptions of ‘normal life’ transformed. The course looks at the Women's Land Army, the Home Guard, the evacuees, the arrival of the American GIs, Women in the factories, and the impact of the holocaust. It will also examine the coalition government, the role of Churchill and the landside victory by Labour in 1945. In terms of legacy we will look at the setting up of the Welfare State in 1948 as a reward for the sacrifices of the war and linking it back to the Beveridge Report of 1942. ARCHAEOLOGY - THE WORLD’S FIRST SUPER-POWERS

The first cities in the world developed in Egypt, Mesopotamia and Turkey. Around these developed a group of powerful empires based along three great rivers, The Nile, Tigris and Euphrates. In this course we will examine how these early empires arose, their effects on their neighbours and each other. We will also look at some of the reasons for their downfall. ART HISTORY

It helps you to recognise the wide range of sources of information and records that are available and how to access and analyse these effectively. This includes information from early censuses, 'Parish Chest' records, local archives, wills, other death and burial records, and also includes a brief introduction to reading old handwriting. DRAWING ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS

Centre: Triangle Annexe

This course starts at the beginning and looks at the type of pencils and papers we use and why. It progresses on to drawing simple objects and then grouping them into arrangements. We will then move onto to drawing simple portraits. A variety of drawing techniques using pencil will be explored and ways of looking at the objects we are drawing. If you join in January or April you will need a little experience of basic drawing. Tutor: Sandra Bouguerch
