This course will look at some aspects of recorded crimes and punishments, from the ancient world to the 20C.
We will consider the 'crimes' based on religious convictions, witchcraft and divination and innovatory techniques of torture and corporal and capital punishment.
Students will be introduced to the punishment of women and children and misdemeanours which would nowadays be seen as 'minor', but which once attracted the death penalty, life imprisonment and transportation.
Appropriate illustrations and handouts will be provided which will include graphic detail and primary source material.
