Calligraphy (D43)

A creative calligraphy course suited to both beginners and the more experienced. You will be introduced to a variety of scripts and calligraphy techniques. Beginners will be taught the basics of Italic script in the first instance, whilst the more experienced will be encouraged to produce pieces which use a variety of calligraphy fonts to create innovative works of art.

Drawing Absolute Beginners (E46)

This course starts at the beginning and looks at the type of pencils and papers we use and why. It progresses on to drawing simple objects and then grouping them into arrangements. A variety of drawing techniques using pencil will be explored and ways of looking at the objects we are drawing.

Drawing Stage 2 (B15)

This is a step up from the beginners course in drawing. You will use a wider range of drawing materials and experiment with different techniques. These will include pencil, wash, ink and charcoal. We will develop different themes and projects and explore expressive aspects of drawing. You will need a little experience of basic drawing skills if you join in January or April.

This course is for those who have experience drawing in different media. For example, pencil, charcoal, ink, wash etc. Advanced drawing techniques will be introduced to help shape your own work. You will follow a project encouraging you to cultivate your own distinctive style leading to an exhibition at the end of the course.

Floral Table Decoration for Christmas: Saturday Workshop (F51)

This Saturday workshop is an introduction to festive flower arranging, using fresh foliage and flowers and will include some decorative accessories. You will create your own Christmas table decoration to take home with you and the session will include a demonstration. The workshop will include all materials in the cost.

Contemporary Stitch (D42)

A creative stitch course which is suited to both beginners and the more experienced. There is the opportunity to learn embroidery, fabric painting and beading techniques to create an individual piece of work based on a set theme. Lino Print Making: Saturday Workshop (F50)

This introduction will help you to design and produce an effective lino print. In the morning we will look at the different equipment, designs that make an impact and lino cutting techniques. In the afternoon we will explore the different papers you can use, ink mixing and rolling and printing techniques without a press.

Equipment will be provided for the workshop and you be able to take away your finished print and a set of notes explaining the process in detail.

For people who want to start at the very beginning. We start with looking at the basic equipment and how it is used. We will then go onto painting landscapes, portraits and botanical themes using a step-by-step approach. We experiment with colour mixing and working on a variety of different paper and boards. Oil Painting (D34)

This course is suitable for absolute beginners. You will learn how to mix colours and use different oil mediums. We will also explore different surfaces to work on. We will use a variety of topics and approaches to get the best out of your paintings. At the first lesson we will look at the materials you need – there is no need to bring anything to the first lesson unless you already have equipment.

Watercolour Stage 2 (B16)

A course for water colourists who have completed a beginners course or already have some experience of watercolour painting. Over the weeks we cover different subjects and techniques to improve your skills. We experiment with using a mixture of medias that complement watercolour painting. For example pen and watercolour wash, watercolour pencils, chalk and oil pastel, conte and antique effects and collage.

Watercolour Stage 3 (C24)

Suitable for the more accomplished students. We aim to extend your creativity, imagination and develop your personal style. The tutor will demonstrate a variety of advanced techniques, the use of new media and new products on the market. We then move on to a themed project. We will explore flowers, seascapes, new perspectives on the landscape and abstract watercolours. During the second term we will extend this to more creative and experimental work, which will help increase your confidence to work in your own style.
