Acrylic Painting (A10)

This course is for those who have used Acrylic paint before. We will look at developing paintings around a topic with an ongoing project and showcasing your work in a small exhibition. Guidance will be given around gathering information and resources and exploring different paint effects. We will work in a variety of styles and look at how known artists have approached similar topics.

Acrylic Painting Absolute Beginners (A09)

For people who want to start at the very beginning. We start with looking at the basic equipment and how it is used. We will then go onto painting landscapes, portraits and botanical themes using a step-by-step approach. We experiment with colour mixing and working on a variety of different paper and boards. You will be shown a variety of techniques which will enhance your painting.

An Introduction to Folk Learning and Popular Culture (B20)

This course will introduce students to a variety of the beliefs and practices inherent in the folklore of people in a non-scientific age. Topics will include the interpretations and uses of magic, the lore of death and representations of mortality, household lore, superstitions and omens, rituals and calendar customs, the supernatural world, folk medicine and plant lore and the ‘dark’ side of fairy tales and children’s games.

Processing Your Family History (D34)

The internet has revolutionised research into family history, making the initial stages much easier. However, when the inevitable problems occur, other sources need to be used. This course will cover parish registers, probate and ‘The Parish Chest' studying samples of each but also discussing relevant websites to enable students to progress.

French Absolute Beginners (A01)

This course covers the basic aspects of the French language and culture within familiar contexts, for example, food and drink in France, shopping and travel. Classes are lively and fun with a focus on speaking and listening with interaction between group members. We use the ‘BBC Talk French Book 1’. By the end of the course you will have acquired sufficient ‘survival’ language to get by on a visit to France. This course starts at Absolute Beginners level in October.

French Conversation Stage 4 (D28)

This course is for learners who already have a good knowledge of French. The aim is to give plenty of opportunities to speak French in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Written texts, recorded material, games and video clips are used to stimulate discussion and increase fluency, and grammar points are practised regularly in order to increase accuracy. The content is similar to that offered in the stage 5 class but with more emphasis on consolidating knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

German Conversation Stage 4 (A03)

This course is run in an informal but structured manner to encourage students to speak in German and develop confidence and fluency. Articles will be translated and some aspects of grammar discussed. The tutor is a native German speaker and she will touch on how German people really speak, their customs and behaviour.

German Stage 5 (A04)

This course is mostly in German. It will include conversation in small groups. Looking at texts mainly from a newspaper or magazine article (reading out loud and translating into English and discussing this text with others in the group) The tutor will provide guidance on grammar and appropriate vocabulary. The emphasis is on conversation in German and exploring some of the nuances of the language.
