Acrylic Painting (A10)

This course is for those who have used Acrylic paint before. We will look at developing paintings around a topic with an ongoing project and showcasing your work in a small exhibition. Guidance will be given around gathering information and resources and exploring different paint effects. We will work in a variety of styles and look at how known artists have approached similar topics.

Acrylic Painting Absolute Beginners (A09)

For people who want to start at the very beginning. We start with looking at the basic equipment and how it is used. We will then go onto painting landscapes, portraits and botanical themes using a step-by-step approach. We experiment with colour mixing and working on a variety of different paper and boards. Calligraphy (D43)

A creative calligraphy course suited to both beginners and the more experienced. You will be introduced to a variety of scripts and calligraphy techniques. Beginners will be taught the basics of Italic script in the first instance, whilst the more experienced will be encouraged to produce pieces which use a variety of calligraphy fonts to create innovative works of art.

Contemporary Stitch (D42)

A creative stitch course which is suited to both beginners and the more experienced. There is the opportunity to learn embroidery, fabric painting and beading techniques to create an individual piece of work based on a set theme. This is a step up from the beginners course in drawing. You will use a wider range of drawing materials and experiment with different techniques. These will include pencil, wash, ink and charcoal. Lino Print Making: Saturday Workshop (F50)

This introduction will help you to design and produce an effective lino print. In the morning we will look at the different equipment, designs that make an impact and lino cutting techniques. In the afternoon we will explore the different papers you can use, ink mixing and rolling and printing techniques without a press.

Equipment will be provided for the workshop and you be able to take away your finished print and a set of notes explaining the process in detail.

Suitable for the more accomplished students. We aim to extend your creativity, imagination and develop your personal style. The tutor will demonstrate a variety of advanced techniques, the use of new media and new products on the market. We then move on to a themed project. We will explore flowers, seascapes, new perspectives on the landscape and abstract watercolours. History of the USA 1890-1920s: Continuity and Change, Prosperity and Prohibition (A13)

This course will explore American history from 1890 until the boom time of the 1920s and will chart the elements of continuity and change in a nation which was changing and evolving at a rapid pace. Issues covered include race relations especially those of white Americans and Afro-Americans, immigration and its effects upon the USA, the rise of big business and the growth of progressivism whose aim was to pass reforms to counter corruption. The boom in industry resulting from mass production and its effects upon the US economy will be explored and America’s entry and role in the First World War. Next, the roaring 20s will be examined, including the role of Jazz and cinema, the changing roles of women and the rise of gangsters including characters such as Al Capone. Finally, prohibition, America’s “great noble experiment”, will be analysed and explored and its failure explained.

History of the USA 1929-1947: The Wall St Crash, The Great Depression, The New Deal and Its Legacy and US Entry Into the Second World War (A14)

This course will explore the devastating effects of The Wall St Crash of 1929 and how it affected the US economy leading to a massive slump which had world-wide consequences. The Role of President Hoover and his inability to deal with the crisis will be examined as well as the social effects upon the American citizens including the Veterans’ march on Washington in 1932. The election of Roosevelt and his subsequent New Deal policies will be explored and the views of historians of their impact and legacy will be addressed. US foreign policy will also be examined, including the “special relationship” with Great Britain and the US entry into the Second World War following the bombing of Pearl Harbour. The course will conclude by looking at US political and world views in the immediate post war era and especially their great fear of communism.

French Absolute Beginners (A01)

This course covers the basic aspects of the French language and culture within familiar contexts, for example, food and drink in France, shopping and travel. Classes are lively and fun with a focus on speaking and listening with interaction between group members. We use the ‘BBC Talk French Book 1’. By the end of the course you will have acquired sufficient ‘survival’ language to get by on a visit to France. This course starts at Absolute Beginners level in October.

This course is for learners who already have a good knowledge of French. The aim is to give plenty of opportunities to speak French in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Written texts, recorded material, games and video clips are used to stimulate discussion and increase fluency, and grammar points are practised regularly in order to increase accuracy. The content is similar to that offered in the stage 5 class but with more emphasis on consolidating knowledge of grammar and vocabulary.

Understanding Italy (A12)

A short course for people who may speak a little Italian. The level of Italian is not important as it will be taught mainly in English but will use key Italian words and phrases to highlight some of the points discussed. It focuses on how culture, religion and multiple invasions have shaped modern Italy and the impact this has had on its business environment, politics and professional organisations. To help us understand Italy we will look at the national anthem, the Italian family, migration, regional differences, dialects and customs and the concept of bella figura (adapting to situations with style).

Understanding Spain (A06)

A short course for people who are interested in or like visiting Spain but may not be able to speak Spanish.
